Newsmaker Student Workshop PDF Print E-mail
Our NewsMaker Workshop provides students an easy and fun platform to practice writing, speaking and presentation skills.

In this workshop, students take on the role of news anchor and news producer, creating their own news story in 3 easy steps using the computers and equipment provided on the day.

Step 1 - Write the Story

In the role of 'reporter', the student plans and writes a news story. This story is then imported into NewsMaker ready for step 2.

Step 1

Step 2 - Read the Story

In step 2 the computer monitor then serves as a teleprompter, and the 'news anchor' reads the story aloud for practice, then makes a recording. Built-in face-tracking, blue-screen and other fun video technologies makes it easy to overlay impressive visual effects. Students can also import video that they have shot at other locations making this an ideal way of bringing together information, video and sound from a previous events such as a school excursion.

Step 2

Step 3 - Publish the Story

In this final step, the student becomes the 'news producer' and publishes the recorded clip as a single video file to be saved onto a CD that they can take home and share with classmates, teachers, family or friends.

Step 3

After participating in this workshop students will be able to:

  • Create a storyline and script for a news report
  • Develop their speaking and presentation skills
  • Shoot and edit a news story using the software provided
  • The Newsmaker workshop is neither grade-level specific nor content-area specific. It will help students improve their communication skills whilst mastering content in any subject area.

At the conclusion of the workshop students will receive a CD with their final production loaded onto it.

How it Works

An information pack is sent to the school with some pre-workshop lessons that need to be delivered before the workshop day. These lessons cover topics such as "how to develop a storyline and script". Schools may also wish students to pre-record any "on-location" reports using a video camera that can be then imported into the production on the workshop day.

During the workshop day students will be involved in:

  • Learning to use the hardware and software provided (all computer equipment will be provided on the day)
  • Shooting and editing their news report

Points to Note
  • Students will need to work in pairs on the workshop day and complete one production between them. The maximum number for the workshop is 30 students. (15 computers will be supplied on the day for students to use).
  • Ideally students should develop a news story that covers a topic being studied in class

Why Newsmaker?

Newsmaker workshops provide students with the opportunities to positively interact with their peers in a stimulating and exciting learning environment. The productions produced by students are a showcase of the students' talents in many areas of the curriculum. Workshops show students a practical side to applying the skills, knowledge and understanding they have learnt in class.

Newsmaker NewsMaker facilitates a classroom environment in which students produce well-organised presentations that clearly and concisely convey concepts and information. NewsMaker provides individual students with immediate feedback for self-assessment of performance. Students frequently choose to rehearse and re-record in order to improve upon fluency, rhythm, pacing, intonation, and expression.

NewsMaker is designed to require minimal technology skills, freeing the student to focus on reading the news story with accurate pronunciation, clear enunciation, and appropriate intonation, and it helps to facilitate self-assessment and peer critiquing strategies too.
